If
you have purchased Chinese colour or machines from History of Mystic Art's by Trent Wylie 30 plus years ago it was not possible to purchase Tattoo equipment in New Zealand, all imports were licensed and you could not even purchase foreign cash from the bank. As an aspiring Tattoo artist I was faced with a choice, give up on my ambition of becoming a Tattoo artist or make my own machines and colours! On the colour
side of things I was fortunate in that I was employed as a leading hand
colourist for the" New Zealand Paint and Varnish Company".
This gave me a good insight into colour formulation and I had access
to hundreds of pigments. Through trial and error I was able to come
up with a selection of safe, bright pigments, which coincidentally turned
out to be virtually the same as used by all major manufacturers in the
world today, proving that their are only a select group of pigments
that are suitable as Tattoo colours. As I was never happy with D.C twin coil, point operated machines I continued trying out all manor of inventions to come up with something better and eventually made my very first pulse-matic! This machine
was a laminated coil on a stainless steel hand made frame and it just
"pumped" and I was so happy with it I used them hard out for
10 years. In 1989 Mystic Art Productions Limited was registered. Once
a following had built up for the "Pulsey" I started refining
it as the original ran at one speed only and was very loud. Last year
Mystic Art's introduced the 4th and final version, the Pulse-Matic "EVO"
. No points, fully enclosed with noise dampener and full speed adjustment
when used with the frequency generator, my favorite machine!
Over the last 10-15 years I have been so busy with the Tattoo supply side of my business that I have had to put off a lot of Tattoo work just to get orders out, however, now I am focusing back on the Tattoo side of my business, which is where I started before I got side tracked into supplies. The Chinese are now the major world player in this industry and I am not prepared to become a re-seller of Chinese products like ALL other suppliers around the world. I will continue to make and supply the core products that I use as an artist and if they are appreciated by others that's fine, if not, that's fine to. Anyone who would like some artwork is welcome to contact me to make an appointment at mystic@iconz.co.nz or 06 8 341036, I work from my home based Studio in Napier.
